“a false witness who pours out lies.”
I love fountains – there’s something refreshing about water gushing into the air and splashing down over rocks to more water below. This pouring out of water is depicted a multitude of times in the Scripture.
John 7:37-39 – Jesus on the last day of the feast declares ‘If anyone is thirsty let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me as the scriptures have said, Out of his innermost being will flow rivers of living water……”
Jeremiah as God’s spokesman challenged the people of God who had forsaken the fountain of living waters and had dug for themselves cisterns which could hold no water.
Water being poured out is pleasant – Lies being poured out is bitter. Built even into the 10 commandments is God’s commitment to truthfulness. You shall NOT bear false witness against your neighbour.
God hates a false witness who pours out lies. He is a God of TRUTH – in fact Jesus declares Himself to be the TRUTH.
Lord help me to speak the truth in love today.
Years ago, at a counseling training course, our instructor asked us the following question – “When does a liar stop being a liar?” When he stops telling lies? No, when he becomes a TRUTH-teller. We must rid ourselves of falsehood in all its forms and put on the belt of truth.
