Reflections on and in the Snow

BibleGateway.com provides this list as a result of my quest to discover the word “snow” in the New International Version bible.
Exodus 4:6

Then the LORD said, “Put your hand inside your cloak.” So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was leprous, like snow.

Here the hand of Moses is instantly infected with the dreaded disease of leprosy.    God uses this to demonstrate to Moses His great power and glory in order to convince this stubborn 80 year old to yield to God’s future plan for His life.

Numbers 12:10

When the cloud lifted from above the Tent, there stood Miriam—leprous, like snow. Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had leprosy;

Here the sister of Moses is infected in an act of judgment for her hasty criticism of God’s leaders.    What would happen to today’s believers if we were judged this severely for words spoken in haste and in contempt of church leadership?

2 Samuel 23:20

Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, who performed great exploits. He struck down two of Moab’s best men. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.

We don’t usually associate lions with snow.   On some of the “stormy days” I’ve experienced with snow I’ve seen porcupines, wolves, owls, weasels and mink.   In this text one of David’s men is cited for a great exploit.    What kind of things has God enabled us to accomplish that will bring glory to His name?

2 Kings 5:27

Naaman’s leprosy will cling to you and to your descendants forever.” Then Gehazi went from Elisha’s presence and he was leprous, as white as snow.

This dreaded disease appears again this time infecting a greedy, materialistic servant of the prophet.    Elisha had sought no financial gain from the ministry God had given to him.   We must be careful to rid ourselves of the love of money which is a root of all kinds of evil.

1 Chronicles 11:22

Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, who performed great exploits. He struck down two of Moab’s best men. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.

The Chronicler repeats what we have earlier learned of one of David’s mighty men.

Job 6:16

when darkened by thawing ice and swollen with melting snow,

Job 24:19

As heat and drought snatch away the melted snow, so the grave snatches away those who have sinned,

Job 37:6

He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’

Job 38:22

“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail,

God’s power over the forces of nature are clearly seen in this poetic book of Job.    God’s storehouses of snow must be enormous.    I am always amazed at how much snow falls from one storm.    Man is shown again and again to be powerless and is humbled a multitude of times as God directs the wind and the waves and the weather.

Psalm 51:7

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

David’s adultery and murderous heart can only be cleansed by God.    God’s cleansing agent is the blood shed in payment – substitionary atonement.    David’s greater Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, provided cleansing for David as HE died for sins upon the cross.    Love so amazing, so divine, DEMANDS my soul, my life, my all.

Psalm 68:14

When the Almighty scattered the kings in the land, it was like snow fallen on Zalmon.

In some cultures the concept of snow would be difficult to explain but not in Israel.    On a trip I was privileged to take to Israel we had snow in Jerusalem and also saw the snowy peaks of Mount Hermon.

Psalm 147:16

He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes.

There is nothing quite so beautiful as the scenes we saw as a family while living in North-Eastern Ontario – sunshine shining on a frost-laden landscape in the heart of winter!

Psalm 148:8

lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding,

Snow is not under the control of “Mother Nature” or “the weather man” but the LORD God Almighty.

Proverbs 25:13

Like the coolness of snow at harvest time is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him; he refreshes the spirit of his masters.

Proverbs 26:1

Like snow in summer or rain in harvest, honor is not fitting for a fool.)

Proverbs 31:21

When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.

I thank God for the mitts, toques, scarfs, sweaters that have been made for me by my mom, my aunt Agnes (Nancy), Grandma, and my wonderful mother-in-law.    Praise God for ability in crocheting, knitting and sewing.     Hours upon hours were invested in these gifts given in love.

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

A classic verse on the power of cleansing.   God’s restoration of our stained record to a spotless righteousness, that of Jesus Christ Himself.    The hymnwriter expressed it well, “I am not skilled to understand what God hath willed, what God hath planned.   I only know at His right hand is one who is my Saviour.”

Isaiah 55:10

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,

Snow again coming down from heaven vindicates its source, so does God’s word as He sends it forth through the mouth of His servants.

Jeremiah 18:14

Does the snow of Lebanon ever vanish from its rocky slopes? Do its cool waters from distant sources ever cease to flow?

Lamentations 4:7

Their princes were brighter than snow and whiter than milk, their bodies more ruddy than rubies, their appearance like sapphires.

Daniel 7:9

“As I looked, “thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze.

Matthew 28:3

His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.

Revelation 1:14

His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.

The appearance of our God is likened to snow in its dazzling white purity.

Take time out today from your shoveling to thank God for the snow!   It speaks volumes to us about God as the above texts so aptly illustrate.
