Peace With God Through Jesus Christ

Hymn No 91 in the Believers Hymn Book has 8 short but powerful stanzas.   A great reminder for our sin sick souls.   {Suitable tune – I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord}
I hear the words of love, I gaze upon the blood,
I see the mighty sacrifice, And I have peace with God.
‘Tis everlasting peace!  Sure as Jehovah’s [...]

My Daughter – President??

Attention Management Consultants – Help is available – Grade 3 student has presidential capabilities!
My oldest daughter, Carolyn, is preparing to launch into a new adventurous chapter of her life.   Last night, at the dinner table, I shared with her and my wife a great document I found in my “pack-rat” collection of memories.
From 1991-2004 we [...]

Brothers Living Together in Unity

My e-mail INBOX was filled this morning with a variety of messages including this sad one from a missionary friend.   I share only extracts from his message requesting prayer…..
Battles rage within our church. First, among the young adults. Another pastor attempted to bring resolution but only made it worse by siding with one party. [...]

Back to School

I can’t believe TBS registers students next Tuesday then we head to Millstream Bible Camp for an Orientation retreat.   This photo was taken at a retreat a few years back when I was entrusted with the task of bringing God’s word to staff and students up at Shalom-By-The-Lake.
Please pray for David Daniels, director of Toronto [...]

What is sacred?

I have preached in a variety of buildings over these summer months and have experienced a variety of styles of worship. As I sat recently in a place of worship I asked myself one question – What is sacred to this congregation?
Is it the pews? Or could they be changed?
Is [...]

Adoniram Judson

Kairos Journal has a great collection of articles for leaders. Access is for those who are in pastoral/preaching ministry. Here is the article on Adoniram Judson.  My reflections and musings are italicized.
Not far from a huge statue of Buddha, Adoniram Judson led Maung Nau down into a Rangoon pond until they [...]

It Is Appointed Unto Man Once To Die

I’m writing this while preparing for a funeral for a special lady who attended Thornloe Crossroads Baptist Church for many years.    Mrs. Esther Hewitt passed into her Lord’s presence on Wednesday and now we have been finalizing preparation to celebrate her life and faith.
She was a woman….
…of kindness …of hospitality  …of friendliness  …of humility   …of love      It [...]

A Bit Hypocritical?

Our Conservative prime minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, said an earlier prime minister, Jean Chretien, is “a bit hypocritical” since he criticized Harper for not attending the summer games in Beijing. In truth, Chretien attended only once in the 5 opportunities he had to attend Summer or Winter games.
How much hypocrisy is permissible [...]

I have been sorting through old prospectuses at the school where I serve as Registrar and Director of Development.  It is amazing that the school is now over 80 years old.
In 1947 Dean Gordon Brown wrote regarding TBS – “We trust the whole Christ in the whole Bible for the whole world.”
He also wrote, “I [...]

Rushing Into Leadership

“Lay hands on no man suddenly….” Paul’s instruction to Timothy reminds us that leadership is not to be fast-tracked. I must confess to some concern when I see young leaders zealously plodding forward, determined to make their mark in the world. Sadly much of this zeal is without knowledge.
I have [...]
