Last summer my wife and I went with our daughters and her parents on a tour of the Toronto harbour. A passing comment made by the tour guide on our way back into port has stuck in my mind. “Look at the skyline,” he urged us. “What are the highest buildings visible?”
They were commercial buildings – the CN tower, First Canadian Place, and all the other business buildings scattered along the horizon.
“Where are the churches?” he asked. “None are visible,” someone replied. “How things have changed!” he responded.
Throughout many years the steeples of churches were the highest points of reference in the cities of the world. Now the places of commerce have surpassed them. Could it be that we worship money more than God?
I still ask myself as I commute to downtown Toronto and serve in an institution which trains leaders, “Where are the churches?”
I am thankful for Christ’s promise, “I will build my church and the gates of hell will NOT prevail against it!”
