We often idealize the New Testament church portraying it a a perfect gathering of men and women of various ages who all got along well and were focused on Christ alone. Someone any interpersonal conflicts we face seem “unChristian” “unbiblical” and “un-New Testament” (if that’s a word.)
But don’t forget Philippians 4 and Acts 15. In Philippians 4 Paul pleads with 2 women in the church in Philippi to be of the same mind. Imagine being publicly exhorted in a public letter by a senior leader of the church. Can you see one of the women “taking offense” and leaving the church “in a huff?” I can! Or look at the relationship between Paul and Barnabas. Their first missionary trip had a few “bumps” but was a time of blessing. When it came time to revisit these same Christians there was a “sharp contention” between these 2 pioneer missionaries over the wisdom of taking John Mark. Barnabas, a relative of John Mark, and the “son of encouragement” wanted to give this young man a second chance. Paul a more “rigid” “do it right the first time” leader, would not agree. Once a quitter—always a quitter! We read the sad rift that developed yet later in 2 Timothy (John) Mark would be seen as being useful to Paul.
So, if you are facing conflicts with other believers, take heart–you’re in good company! But be wise in how you handle these disagreements. “As much as lies within you, live at peace with all men!”
May the mind of Christ my Saviour, live in me from day to day;
By His love and power controlling ALL I DO and SAY!” Amen!
