This Is The Day

We have sung a newer version of “This Is The Day that the Lord has made” at Calvary Baptist the last few weeks. With a different rhythm, a few different words and a more contemporary style, the song appears to be “catching on.”
But is either the original chorus or this latest version an accurate reflection of the mood or tone of the text of Psalm 118. It is possible that this was the “hymn” sung by the followers of Christ with their Lord as the Last Supper drew to a close. Matthew 26:30 indicates “When they had sung a hymn…they went out to the Mount of Olives.” Typically the Great Hallel which concludes with Psalm 118 was sung throughout the Passover meal.
Skim through Psalm 118 and notice the struggle the psalmist is depicting:
“In my anguish I cried to the LORD….” v.5
“All the nations surrounded me….” v. 10
“I was pushed back and about to fall….” v.13
“The LORD has chastened me severely,…” v.18
“The stone the builders rejected….” v.22

All of these prophetic texts predict the agony, suffering and ultimate rejection of “The Christ.” Though rejected by men, the LORD was made the capstone, the key stone of the building, by the hand of the MASTER BUILDER. The LORD did this and it is marvelous in our eyes.
As I reflect again upon my suffering Saviour I am very grateful that GOOD FRIDAY was the day HE MADE. I will rejoice and be glad in it!
